Type Command Prompt in the search bar and click enter.

Write wmic diskdrive get status, model, and click enter. Type the command as it is. After entering the command you will see the below image.


Note: In the status column, if the status is OK it means Hard disk is healthy, and if the status is Pred Fail it means the hard disk is unhealthy.

By using the Windows CHKDSK Tool

Windows CHKDSK is a pre-built windows tool by which you can scan your hard drive individually, and able to check hard disk health. It will let you know about the basic errors like File System errors, Corrupted files, Bad sectors, lost clusters. Chkdsk can also automatically fix certain types of problems.

It will generally take about 5 minutes or less. It checks the health of a hard disk, flash drive, and memory card.

Go to This PC then under the Device and Drivers option right-click on your drive and select the properties. Navigate to the Tool tab and click on the Scan button. It will take a few minutes and will give you the result.


You will get one of the three results listed below:

  1. No errors were found. (It means your drive is healthy)

Using a third-party tool ‘Crystal Disk Info’

You can use software like CrystalDiskInfo to get the health status and much more information which you will not get from methods 1 and 2. These tools use the same S.M.A.R.T method to fetch data as WMIC uses.

CrystalDiskInfo is really very simple and easy to use and gives lots of information like health, temperature, Power on hours, Powers on count, and also the rotation rate of the drive.

By using Hard Drive Manufacture’s Software

Most hard drive manufactures provide the free tool to monitor the performance of your hard drive. Your first step should be the which tool is suitable for you, so to do that first you should know about what is the model number of your drive.

If you know the model number you can skip this step and move ahead otherwise go to the search bar and search for System Information and click on the result which you will see on the top of the search list. 

Then click on Components > Storage > Disks. After that, you will see the model number of your drive.


Finally, go to the manufacture’s website and search for their hard drive utility. These are the biggest brands Western Digital, Seagate, Samsung, etc.
